Join readers from throughout the county for "On the Same Page in Lackawanna County," a book club that's part of the Lackawanna County Library System's 25th Anniversary Celebration. The featured selection is "The Book of Fate" by Brad Meltzer, a mystery within a thriller involving American history, Masonic secrets, modern Washington intrigue and high society glitz. Participants will receive free copies of the book and will have the opportunity to meet the author at a special reception on April 17. ALBRIGHT MEMORIAL LIBRARY
RECEIVES GRANT TO DIGITIZE
LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION

From the desk of Susan Jeffery, Head of the Reference Department at Albright Memorial Library:

"The Scranton Public Library is pleased to be one of only eight libraries in Pennsylvania to be awarded a $30,000 Library Services and Technology Act grant to develop a multi-agency plan for digitizing local historical collections. Library Director Jack Finnerty stated, 'This is the first step in guaranteeing the survival of many unique books, maps, photos and directories dealing with our area. Ultimately the goal is to digitize these resources so that they are available via the internet to help the public in their research, genealogy searches, and student assignments'.

"The Scranton Public Library will partner with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, the Lackawanna Historical Society, the Times-Tribune, the Anthracite Heritage Museum, and the Steamtown National Historic Site on the project. The grant provides for a consultant to assess the Library’s local history collection and the collections of the five local partners. This assessment will help the partners to prioritize the need to digitize at-risk items and those items with the greatest need for access by the public. The consultant will recommend a course of action for implementing a digitization project, and conduct a workshop for the partners and many other local agencies and educational institutions that will benefit from a digital collection of local history materials."

Socrates Cafe
Feb. 28th
6:30 to 8:00 PM

The Albright Memorial Library is proud to host The Socrates Cafe, the widely popular philosophy discussion forum. Prof. Phil Jenkins from Marywood University will be the facilitator.

Each gathering brings together people from all walks of life and experiences to raise questions, listen to, and discuss a topic chosen by the group that evening.

Socrates--the Greek philosopher after whom the group is named -- exhorted his students to "follow the argument wherever it leads." All sessions are committed to open, respectful philosophical discussion and debate. No prior learning is required.

This is free, but please call Laura Hendricks at 348-3000 ext. 3043 to reserve your space as it is limited to 25 people. Sorry, no walk-ins. We are accepting reservations for February and March, 2008.
