New Blog: Scranton Christmas Windows 1938-1960

A festive new blog was just launched showing lots of holiday display windows from Household Outfitters Company. The blog is titled Scranton Christmas Windows 1938-1960.

From the blog:

"In 2009 Gene Giancini was cleaning out a building on Scranton’s West Side. His family had operated a business in the building for 30 years, and he was in the process of selling it. He found, stacked in the corner, old photos of Christmas window displays from Household Outfitters Company, 306-314 Lackawanna Ave. Mr. Giancini generously donated the photos to the Scranton Public Library. We will be presenting them through this web site."

Another Budget Cut Casualty: Proquest Newspapers Database--But We ARE Retaining Historical NY Times

Though they could have been a lot worse, public libraries in Pennsylvania are still feeling the sting of the recent PA budget cuts. And the Reference Department is no exception. In addition to the cancellation of four local newspaper subscriptions and the cancellation of our subscriptions to two genealogy databases (AncestryLibrary and HeritageQuest), the Reference Department will not be renewing our in house subscription to the Prqoest newspapers database.

Proquest Newspapers is a database that provides full-text newspaper articles from 5 popular national newspapers--The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor--going back as far as the early 1990s.

One silver lining to this new cut--Renerence has decided to retain our subscription to the Historical New York Times databases, also from Proquest. The Historical New York Times features PDF images of every page of every issue of the New York Times from 1851-2006.
