The Pennsylvania Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Will Begin Accepting Applications November 1st

The Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low income people pay their heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants and crisis grants. You need not have an unpaid bill to receive home heating energy assistance. You can receive this money without being in the Cash Assistance program -- a family of four with an annual income of up to $35,280 can qualify for assistance. No lien is placed on your property if you receive this help.

LIHEAP applications will be available when the program reopens on November 1, 2010.

Please note that
The Department of Public Welfare may extend or shorten the program depending upon the availability of federal funds.

Writing of War: An Evening With Jeff Shaara Monday, November 15th at 7 PM at Scranton Cultural Center

His novels about the Civil War, World War I and World War II have been best sellers. Now he is coming to Lackawanna County to share his story.

The Lackawanna County Library Lecture Series is proud to present Jeff Shaara, author of Gods & Generals, on Monday, November 15th at 7 PM at the Scranton Cultural Center. A book signing will follow the presentation.

An Afternoon With Mark Twain Sunday, October 31st at 2 PM at Weinberg Library at University of Scranton

Storyteller Charles Kiernan , as Mark Twain, will retell stories from Twain’s life that entertain and enlighten viewers to Twain’s humor and wit. Light Refreshments will be served and time to mingle with Mr. Twain in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library at the University of Scranton.

Admission is Free. Tickets are available at the Albright Memorial Library and the Weinberg Memorial Library.

Street parking is free as well as the on campus parking lots.

SIRS Discoverer Is Back As Part of Power Library

Commonwealth Libraries, in conjunction with HSLC/Access PA, the POWER Library and ProQuest, is pleased to announce that SIRS Discoverer, an award-winning general reference resource for beginning learners and researchers in grades 1-9, is once again part of the POWER Library suite of Databases and resources, beginning today, October 8, 2010 and continuing through the end of December, 2011 (i.e. for the next 15 months.)

SIRS Discoverer includes carefully selected full-text articles and images from more than 1,900 domestic and international newspapers, magazines, and government documents, along with 9,000+ educational weblinks via the integrated Discoverer WebFind content set. And, more than 29,000 graphics, photos, maps, and charts are available.

Discoverer also offers supplemental curriculum and learning materials, including an educator's guide, middle- and elementary-level student workbooks, citation guidelines, research strategy worksheets, and more.
