Children's Library Bake Sale and Book Sale This Weekend (June 1st - 3rd)

The Lackawanna County Children's Library will be hosting a Bake Sale and Children's Book Sale this Friday, June 1st; Saturday, June 2nd; and Sunday, June 3rd.  All proceeds benefit the Children's Library.

Help raise money by stopping by for some goodies and sweet noms.

Library Will Close At 2 PM Friday, May 25th To Prep For Swingin' On Vine


Albright Memorial Library will close at 2 PM on Friday, May 25th to prepare for our Swingin' On Vine Fundraiser. 

There's still time to get your tickets, which are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. 

The computer lab will be open from 2 PM - 5 PM on May 25th for patron computer use.

John Anthony Gilvey, Author of "Jerry Orbach: Prince of the City," To Speak at Library Lecture Series Tuesday, August 7th


Author John Anthony Gilvey, author of Jerry Orbach: Prince of the City, will be the next presenter in the Matthew J. Flynn Library Lecture Series on Tuesday, August 7th at 7 PM at the Scranton Cultural Center.  Tickets will be available the beginning of July and will be FREE with your Lackawanna County Library Card.

Actor Jerry Orbach (1935-2004) was Baby's father in 1987's Dirty Dancing and the voice of candlestick Lumiere in Disney's Oscar-nominated Beauty and the Beast.  He was Detective Lennie Briscoe on TV's Law & Order.  And he was a Tony Award-winning Broadway star whose roles include Billy Flynn in 1975's original Broadway production of Chicago.

But did you also know his mother was a native of Plymouth, PA and he spent part of his childhood living in Scranton?

Gilvey's multimedia presentation will include clips and photos of Orbach's work on stage, screen and television, as well as information on Orbach's roots in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Fire At The Furnace Friday, June 1st

The Fire at the Furnace fundraiser will be held Friday, June 1st, 8 PM - 11 PM at 159 Cedar Avenue.  Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  The fundraiser kicks off the Arts on Fire Festival, running June 1st through the 3rd.

Chances For a Zoom! To Be Raffled at Swingin' On Vine May 25th

Starting Monday afternoon (May 14th), you will be able to purchases raffle tickets to win a Zoom! Whitening session (as seen on ABC's Extreme Makeover).

Tickets are $5.00 a chance.

Winners will be announced at the conclusion of Swingin' On Vine (Friday, May 25th, 5 PM - 8 PM).


The Zoom! Whitening package has been generously donated by Hazzouri Cosmetic, Implant & Family Dentistry; this package is valued at $650.

"The Library In My Life" Essay Contest

Is the library important to you?  Write an essay and tell us why.  You could win a Nook Color!  

Rules: 

(1) Open to anyone 9th grade through adult. 

(2) In an essay of 350 words or less, describe how a library changed your life, improved it, or is a meaningful part of it. 

(3) Entries must be typed and must include the writer's name, address, telephone number, and the Lackawanna County Library System library you visit most. 

(4) Deadline for entries: May 25, 2012.

(5) Essays may be dropped off at the Circulation Desk of any LCLS library; sent via email to lclsessays@albright.org; or mailed to Essay Contest, LCLS, 520 Vine St., Scranton, PA 18509. 

(6) Essay writers agree to allow LCLS to display and/or publish their essays and to use their names and the context of their entries for promotional purposes. 

(7) Entries will be judged in two categories: Grades 9 - 12 and ages 18+. 

Winners will be announced on June 1, 2012. One winner in each category will receive a Nook Color

Six New Titles Added To Gale Virtual Reference Library Database


The Scranton Public Library Reference Department would like to announce new eBook additions to the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) online resource.  These six (6) titles include: The Cooking of Brazil, Digital Photography Essentials, Grow Fruit, Grow Vegetables, Encyclopedia of Diseases and Disorders, and Alternative Energy Sources. GVRL allows the user to print in pdf, listen, cite, email, translate, download to mp3, and download to an eReader!

You can find these titles in the library catalog.  A link will take you to the GVRL homepage where you can log in with your Lackawanna County Library card barcode number. Another way to access this resource is from the www.albright.org webpage. Near the bottom of the page, on the left there is a icon for GVRL.

CORRECTION: Due To Rain, UGI Gas Line Work Will Close 500 Block of Vine on Wednesday, May 2nd

Due to the rainy weather, UGI Penn called and informed us they will be postponing closing the 500 block of Vine Street until tomorrow (Wednesday, May 2nd) for gas line work.  The block is expected to be closed for most of the day, so please keep this in mind if you are planning to visit the library Wednesday.  Thanks.
