Foundation Center, Upcoming Grant Classes at Library, Featured in New Issue of Go Lackawanna

How to Download eBooks for Kindle From the LCLS Online Catalog

1. Go to the Overdrive eBook catalog section listing Kindle titles.

2. Add the eBooks you wish to check out to your eCart, and then proceed to checkout. You can check out up to 10 eBooks at a time, and the loan period is 14 days. If an eBook is already checked out by another patron, you may place an eHold on it.

3. Sign in by entering your library card number. On the next screen, view the eBook(s) you have selected to check out, and click on "Get for Kindle." A second window will open, taking you to Amazon.com

4. Viewing the library book on Amazon.com, click on "Get Library Book" on the right side of the screen. You will be prompted to enter your Amazon.com login information. (Note: You must use the email address you entered when you registered your Kindle.) Then choose your device from a drop-down list and click Continue.

5. Your eBook has now been delivered to your device and will download the next time you are connected to Wi-Fi.

6. If you wish to download your eBook directly to your Kindle from your computer via the USB cord (if you cannot connect to Wi-Fi), click Download Now. You will be prompted to save the file. Choose your Kindle from the location list and save the file in the documents folder. Now when you unplug your Kindle from the computer, the book should show up as downloaded and ready to read.

New Location of " Library Express" at the Mall at Steamtown; Will Remain Open Until December

GREAT NEWS! Our library store at the Mall at Steamtown will remain open until the end of the year. It will now be located on the main strip of the 2nd floor of the mall (a few places down from FYE) and the new name is simply LIBRARY EXPRESS.

You will be able to sign up for a library card, use the Internet, attend classes in genealogy and library databases (as well as children's programs), and (of course) borrow books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs. The Friends of the Scranton Public Library will also have a number of select used books for sale as well.

Help Wanted: Children's Program Coordinator at Nancy Kay Holmes Branch in Green Ridge

The Nancy Kay Holmes Branch Library (Green Ridge Street at Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509) is looking for a qualified candidate to plan and maintain its’ Family Place program as well as develop and implement new programs and services for children under the age of 12. The qualified candidate must possess a genuine interest in inspiring children to become life-long library users; have the ability to read and interact with a diverse group of children and their parents in a meaningful and positive manner; and be enthusiastic and flexible. Candidate should also work well with fellow employees and the general public. Computer skills are essential.

Preferred candidate would possess a background in early childhood or elementary education or equivalent experience working with children. In addition, possess a high comfort level with technology and Web 2.0 tools.

The schedule includes nights and weekends; 30-35 hrs per week; mini mum staring salary $12.

The concept of a Family Place Library is to expand the traditional role of children’s services found in libraries. The library environment is redesigned to be welcoming and appropriate for children beginning at birth; connect parents with the resources, programs and services offered at the library and other family service agencies; and reach out to non-traditional library users. The Library’s Head of Children’s Services collaborates with the Branch Manager to ensure that the overall goals are being meet for Family Place.

Listed below are examples of the tasks and responsibilities:

Specific to Family Place:

*Planning and maintaining the calendar for Family Place Workshops. (5-week sessions twice a year for two groups, infants to 3-year-olds and 4-5-year-olds)

*Contacting and scheduling guest speakers and hiring new guest speakers (includes sending thank-you notes to guest speakers)

*Providing a story and craft to reflect or enhance the guest speaker’s topic

*Ensuring activities meet with organizational requirements

*Advertising and promoting Family Place, however and wherever possible (includes creating calendars and updating on-line calendars, designing brochures and fliers, word-of-mouth promotion within the library, contacting local publications such as Happenings and Today's Child)

*Completing annual evaluations for Family Place

*Pursuing outreach to new and non-traditional library users, especially parents and very young children

*Coalition-building with community agencies that serve families and young children to connect parents to community resources

*Training may include overnight stays once or twice a year.

*Specific to Nancy Kay Holmes Children's Programs:

*Providing a story time twice a week as well as a craft that ties in with the story read

*Scheduling and organizing various special events throughout the month

*Contacting and contracting performers

*Promoting events through fliers, local publications, and word of mouth

*Maintaining on-line calendars, Nancy Kay Holmes website, Flickr account, and the Scranton district website

*Contributing to Nancy Kay Holmes branch blog

*Overseeing Winter and Summer Reading programs

*Conducting outreach story times monthly – such as at Head Start in Dunmore.

When you visit Scranton Public Library, always make sure to bring your library card with you. Effective September 1, 2011, the fee for a temporary card will be $1.00. The fee to replace a lost card will remain $2.00. Valid ID is required for either a new library card, a replacement for a lost library card, or for a temporary card to use for the day.

So remember--if you should arrive without your library card and want to check our materials or use a computer, the fee will be $1.00 as of September 1st.

Our next Socrates Cafe will be held on Thursday, August 25th at 6:30 PM in the Community Room (basement of the Lackawanna County Children's Library). This event is handicapped accessible.

This thought provoking discussion group has been in place for over two years at Albright Memorial Library. You are welcome to come and check it out. A variety of people raise questions and respectfully listen to one another discuss a topic chosen that evening. No previous learning is required.

FREE eBook Help Class Saturday, August 27th at 2 PM

Albright Memorial Library will be offering a FREE class on downloading titles from our new collection of eBooks. The class will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 2 PM in the Computer Learning Lab (basement of Children's Library).

So if you need help with your e-Book or e-Reader, you can join us as we walk through the Overdrive software and show you how to transfer the library's eBooks to your e-Reader.

Seating is limited to 10 people, so reservations are required.

Meet SAM, The New PC Reservation/Printing System in the Reference Department

On Thursday, August 4th, the library patrons and staff of the Reference Department wereintroduced to SAM (Smart Access Manager), our brand-new system for using the library computers and paying for photocopies--your library card number will now be used to both access the reference computers AND to make photocopies.

SAM was made possible by a generous donation from the Praxair Foundation.

Here are some features of SAM:

Payment Center:

*The new payment center is a self service payment center for patrons and is located in the Ready Reference area.

* Touch screen features instructions in both English and Spanish.

*Can be used to add credit to library cards for copying - both in change (dimes, quarters, and nickels) and paper money ($1, $5, $10 and $20 bills)

* Creates Visitor Passes for computer use (fee: $1)

* Will give visitors without library cards a copy pass for the day.

* Can be used by patrons to pay on their library account. Credit Card payments option will be coming soon.

PC Reservation System:

*Visitor Day Passes to use the internet can be purchased at the Payment Center for $1.00.

*Computer sessions are guaranteed ½ hour, followed by incremental extensions if no one is waiting to use the computer (max 6 hours per day)

* You can login for 5 consecutive sessions, but will need to wait a ½ hour before the can do another 5 consecutive sessions. (max 12 logins per day)

* Copying is available in either black/white and color (b/w $0.25 and color $0.75)

* Your library card is now required to photocopy or print from the computers. (Visitors can add $ onto a visitor copy pass)

*Copies that are still on your Vendacard will be transferred to your library card at the Reference Desk.

New Database in Access Pennsylvania Power Library: eBooks From EBSCO

NetLibrary, the eBook database in Access Pennsylvania Power Library, has been acquired by EBSCO. As a result, Power Library has a new eBook database, titled eBooks from EBSCO. The full-text eBooks included in the database are full-text, searchable, and available for use on personal computers in online formats.

Reference Computers Will Be Down August 2nd and 3rd; Computer Lab Will Offer Limited Hours

The Reference Department computers will be OUT OF SERVICE on Tuesday, August 2nd and Wednesday, August 3rd.

The Computer Lab (basement of the Children's Library) will be open on Tuesday from 9 AM to 12:30 PM and on Wednesday, August 3rd from 9 AM to 5 PM for your computer use. Sessions will be limited in length depending on computer availablility. There will be printing available in the computer lab.

The Reference and Periodicals Rooms will be open on these two days for microfilm, newspapers, magazines and wireless internet access. The copy machines will not be working.

Finger Lakes Wine Country Bus Trip (Scranton Public Library Fundraiser) Sunday, October 23rd (SOLD OUT)

UPDATE AUGUST 27th: The bus trip is sold out. However, cancellations are possible. If you would like to be placed on a waiting list, call Laura at 348-3000, extension 3043 and leave your name and phone number.

Albright Memorial Library is sponsoring a Finger Lakes Wine Country Bus Trip on Sunday, October 23rd.

Cost is $80 per person ($40.00 deposit due at time of booking). Cost includes round-trip bus transportation, tasting fees at 5-6 wineries, 4 course dinner at Belhurst Castle (Choice of 3 entrees) and driver's tip. Payment is full is due October 7th. Everyone must be 21 years old to attend this bus trip, and ID is required.

The bus will depart Scranton Public Library at 8 AM and will return to the library at approximately 10:30 PM.

For Bob Booth

Today was the memorial service for a true friend of the library, Mr. Bob Booth. Mr. Booth passed away July 7th of cancer. A schoolteacher for over 30 years, Bob was a longtime member of the Friends of the Scranton Public Library and a volunteer at the Lackawanna Historical Society.

Most of all, Bob was a true and dear friend to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him, and he will be greatly missed by the staff of the Reference Department.

On a personal note, the picture above was taken at Tavern on the Green in New York City in 2004, on one of the many daytrips to New York that Bob and I took together throughout the years.

Rest in Peace, Bob.

LCLS Now Offers E-Books!

MorningStar Investment Research Center, a business database which is accessible from home with your library card, is adding some terrific additions -- including a more user-friendly interface -- this Fall.

Among the new addition will be: Historical Stock Quotes for companies going back to the 1960s (which patrons find very helpful, particularly during tax time); the ability to graphically chart a company's chief competitor(s) (e.g. Coca-Cola vs Pepsi); information on executive compensation; executive biographies; weekly insider transactions; and Mutual Fund interactive charts and a list of current and historical biographies.
